There is no reason to buyout the remaining four years of center Marc Savard, as his $4 Million salary is off the books due to the LTIR exemption.
- mikeinbuffalo

As I understand it, injured players cannot be bought out, so Savard isn't an option anyways.

that is correct.. but if savard decides to come off IR to retire.. the buyout becomes a possibility

savard comes off of LTIR.. takes the buyout, retires.

never even has to lace them up.

the sens won't buy out michalek, for a few reasons......

1. when he's healthy, he's easily the best winger that the sens have, and all indications are that he's finally healthy.

2. even if he only puts in 15-20 goals a year, and only plays 60 games, his deal is still very reasonable

3. who the hell would they replace him with

4. the sens have like 20 mil in cap space, and are well below the floor. they need to spend money, not trim their payroll

would almost rather see the Habs buy out Josh Gorges. 5 years at $4 million left. he's a decent dman, but he's one-dimensional, small and not very physical. it's a ridiculous contract and the Habs could easily replace him for half that cap space. Kaberle would come off the books in a year anyway. it's unlikely but it's what i would do if i were MB. Habs have some really good young dmen in the lineup/about to crack the lineup (Subban, Emelin, Tinordi, Beaulieu) but the veteran presence needs an overhaul.

An interesting article, but...

a) How does a broke-ass team like the Isles cut a 25 million dollar cheque to DiPi?

b) Who wouldn't take Volchenkov at 4.25? If he were bought out, wouldn't he get basically the same on a new deal?

they only have to pay him 2/3rds his salary over the remainder of the contract term

basically.. to their payroll, its cheaper by a third to buy him out.

But you have to factor in inflation (and interest costs if you need to go into debt to come up with 25 mil)

25 million up front may be worth more than 40 million over a decade (or whatever the exact numbers are).

why?

i am the leafs.. easy decision

dont sign bozak if he wants anything more than 2.5

buy out komi

keep grabo.. if he doesnt find his game this year then use the second compliance buyout on him next summer.

the guy had one bad half season and everyone says its time to write him off.. thats just dumb... sorry.. but it is.

i dont' think he'd get anywhere near that. he's not teh same player he was in ottawa. his style of play has broken him down a lot, often injured. he's missed around 50 games in the 3 years that he's played in NJ.

not saying he wouldnt' get signed, but certainly not to a 4mil + deal....IMO

you are missing the point.. they dont have to pay the lump sum up front

they still get to pay it over the length of the contract being bought out.

for instance.. if a guy was signed for 5 million a year for 3 more years.. the buyout would cost the team 3.33million a year for 3 years

I say let komi sit in the minors...not to punish him but i doubt any one signs him anyways. He still gets paid and we save the 2 buyouts.

I loved burke, but his morals sometimes held the team back. By doing 'the nice thing' and buying out komi, we waste a precious buyout that MAY have to be used next summer if say, grabo craps the bed again. Let's say we sign clowe or clarkson and overpay and they turn out awful, there's one buyout. Would hate to be stuck with grabo because we did the nice thing and set komi free.

This franchise owes the fans and can afford to pay komi his $4.25

problem is the cap hit.. leave komi in the minors and 3.5million of his hit still counts against the leafs cap

you can no longer hide salary in the AHL.. only $999K gets taken off the cap.

Why would Savard do that? If he stays on LTIR he gets 100% of his salary. Also, if he decided to retire he would get nothing as he would be retired.

If he gets bought out, he jumps almost to #1 on my UFA target list. Put him in a situation to succeed and stay healthy and he could be a real gem.

He's probably not the partner for Dion we need (shoots left, can't log huge minutes anymore), but he would look great as a 3/4.

Yeah, I don't mind if they hold on to him for one more season as I'd hate to see him go...I just don't think he'll ever become the player that justifies that huge contract...
